Developing and Enacting Comprehensive Tobacco Control Legislation In Jamaica

Background and/or Objectives: The Heart Foundation of Jamaica - for The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control has received a grant from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Inc to accomplish the abovenamed project in Jamaica. The proposal involves advocating for the speedy passage, enactment and monitoring of comprehensive tobacco control legislation in Jamaica, aligned with the FCTC. A key stakeholder will be the Ministry of Health Jamaica. If the legislation is passed within ample time before the end of the project, we will reorient strategies and activities toward implementation and monitoring of legislation.

Methods/ Description: Project strategies will include:

  • Providing direct technical assistance to the MOH Jamaica to develop comprehensive tobacco control legislation
  •  Building awareness by promoting the need for comprehensive tobacco control legislation across Government ministries and other agencies. Involve other sectors beyond the health sector
  • Sensitizing Parliamentarians to the benefits of comprehensive tobacco control legislation in fulfilment of FCTC guidelines
  • Broadening the civil society support structure to support comprehensive tobacco control legislation and the goals of the Jamaica Coalition of Tobacco Control in general.
  • Establishing good relationships with the media by providing timely information and feedback supported by Editors’ Forums, and press events
